From where Kali was, she couldn’t see Ryu’s face very well. It didn’t help that there was a kid that was three inches taller than her sitting in her line of view.
Although she couldn’t see anything, she distinctly heard Ms. Handerson say, “I believe there is an empty seat back there, right next to Kali. Why don’t you sit there?”
Kali glanced around and, sure enough, there was an empty desk on her left. She stared at her textbook and repeated to herself that she would not stare at him just because he’s new. She heard Ryu sit down and was intensely aware of his presence there. Well… maybe she would just peek. But only so she would be able to recognize him later. Many an awkward situation has aroused from someone recognizing her from one of her classes and her not knowing them. She glanced at him from the corner of her eye…and had to bite her tongue to stop herself from gasping aloud.
Ryu looked different from everyone else in the school. He had black hair that appeared to have not been cut for a few months too many. The features of his face were all angled and precise. His eyes were an interesting shade of green. They were glittering with what seemed to be…amusement? In school? …Wait. She really shouldn’t really be seeing his eyes at all, unless he was looking back at…Oops.
She quickly dropped her gaze and, feeling herself go red, muttered, “S-Sorry.”
Kali tried to shift her attention back to her homework, but instead of a textbook entry on the Industrial Revolution, she saw a mental image of Ryu reflected back on the pages.
She was utterly and hopelessly in love.
